National Geographic Traveler
August 2000 issue By Dan Koeppel
Excerpts from, "Where Sports Are Born"

"When it comes to the outdoors, almost anything goes in Squamish. What makes Squamish a great adventure base? "You can see for your-self," local mountaineering expert Kevin McLane told me early in the visit. From the 2100-foot Stawamus Chief a climbing destination that offers 300 climbing routes we could see Howe Sound, whose consistent breezes attract windsurfers from around the world.

Moisture sweeps in off the ocean, creating snowstorms that dump on dozens of nearby peaks, including 8,782-foot Mount Garibaldi, and Alpha and Omega, both over 6000 feet and Whistler-Blackcomb 30 miles northeast of Squamish. Come spring and summer, the prodigious snowmelt fuels 5 kayaking and rafting rivers. The 200 miles of biking routes in the area range from gentle to forest tight switchbacks. Squamish is now seen as a sports haven."

The  Sea to Sky Highway between Vancouver and Squamish is one of the most scenic coastal highways in the world. In April 2006 the Guardian newspaper in London chose it for their list of the    "Worlds five best road trips" - the highway is carved out of the cliffs and runs along the shoreline of the pacific ocean Howe Sound fjord. Towering rock faces that plunge to the sea. Rivers cascading in bubbly plumes off a sheer cliff. And intense colours that mesmerize even the most jaded traveller. Glittering blue Howe Sound. Brilliant white glacier ice. Jagged black peaks against an azure sky.

Dream Adventures and places of wonder await you in this dramatic land.
